Proverb Generator

Another piece that will be in OMA for one night is Proverb Generator. The basic idea is that I am playing a bit with constructs of speech and a bit with predictive things. Most proverbs seem to me to be a combination of IF:THEN statements.  Using that, I broke them into components that can be mixed and matched. Much like stripes, plaids and solids, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.  The electronics is pretty simple, couple switches, couple LCD displays and a controller.

What isn’t so simple is look and feel of the piece. I want to be reminiscent of Esmerelda at Disneyland and the other fortune teller machines while having a touch of futurism or at least backwards compatible futurism.  Trying to find a mannequin that had the look I wanted took a bit of time.  Then making the cabinet for him is the next thing. This first picture is kind of a full size mockup of what I wanted the basic shape to be.

Once I was happy with that, it’s time to make the actual cabinet. Here is the cabinet without it’s final trim, but the main assembly is basically done.

What’s left to do is put on all the trim and mount the electronics on a plate and then put that box where the little board is with a printout taped to it. It will be a sandwich of hardboard, heavy paper printout on glossy paper and plexiglass to cover it all.  This should happen soon. Also the cabinet will get a light stain and then a heavy coat of sealer to protect it. Pictures and updates soon….
